Dove Valley

We are now fairly certain that Travellers have followed the course of the River Dove for generations and for maybe as many as 500 years. All the way along it we have found place name references such as Tinkers Pit and Gypsy Banks; records of births and marriages such as at Sheen and Hartington; census records such as at Dovehead, Hollinsclough, Longnor and Hartington; and long-established atchin tans such as at Hartington and most notably, although just out of the South West Peak Park area, at Gypsy Banks at Alstonfield.

Just exactly which routes were taken we will never know. More than likely Travellers would have taken all and any routes available to them at any given time but never straying far from the river.
